ART WALK at Mirada Arts and Science Night 2017

Our goal is to have one Art Guide for every classroom in order allow for all students the opportunity to participate in our Art Masterpiece program.

What is Art Masterpiece?
Art Masterpiece is a national enrichment program where volunteers use reproductions of fine works of art to promote art literacy in children. Art is an integral part of life and the Art Masterpiece Program is a chance to stimulate the students' thought, perception, and imagination. In the end, students attain a greater awareness of the world around them.  Parent volunteers will visit classrooms 6 times throughout the school year to introduce a great work of art. They give a brief background of the artist's life and style, discuss the artist's artwork, and engage the students in a fun hands-on project.

Why is art education important?
Studies show that art enhances a child’s overall education. Art encourages cognitive, analytical and creative thinking skills. It strengthens physical coordination and develops self-discipline. As children increase their awareness of art, they are more able to recognize, interpret and value the art they encounter in their everyday world.

I would like to be a guide, but I don't know much about art.  Is that a problem?
Nope! Many of the parent volunteers come with little or no background in art. You can learn right along with the students. Qualities such as reliability and enthusiasm are more important in our Art Guides than artistic ability.  Art Masterpiece is one of the few volunteer programs where you can teach in your child's classroom.  Lessons, ideas for art projects and Pinterest boards, along with helpful notes and quick tutorials are available for each lesson.  The work is done for you, so Art Guides only need to be willing to devote a small portion (1-3 hours) of their time each month.  In return, they receive gratification for bringing Art Education to appreciative and interested students.

Is there training for Art Guides?

Yes, a brief training is provided.  If needed, we can also provide opportunities for volunteers to observe a class and assist a returning Art Guide, before they commit to a specific classroom.
